The Embassy of the United States of America and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia are pleased to announce the annual competition for Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships in the United States for the 2007-2008 academic year.

 

HUBERT H. HUMPHREY PROGRAM

FOR THE 2007-2008 ACADEMIC YEAR

 The Embassy of the United States of America and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia are pleased to announce the annual competition for Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships in the United States for the 2007-2008 academic year.

 

Scholarships are awarded competitively to Croatian citizens to study or research at American universities, and are subject to availability of funds.

 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SCHOLARSHIPS

APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND COMPETITION SCHEDULE

 

The competition is open from February 27 to May 1, 2006.

Applications (hard copy) must be submitted in English. Handwritten, incomplete and late applications will not be considered.


 

All applications, including references, undergo technical and academic reviews. Candidates who satisfy all requirements will be interviewed by Croatian-American interviewing teams. Based on their recommendation the American Embassy and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports will select the finalists and submit their names by October 2006, for final approval to the J. William Fulbright Board of Foreign Scholarships in the United States. Selected grantees will be notified of the final approval when their affiliations at U.S. universities are confirmed in April 2007.

 

Finalists for Humphrey grants will be required to take a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

 

HUBERT H. HUMPHREY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (NON-DEGREE)

(for civil servants at state and local levels, judiciary, non-governmental organizations, media professionals)

 

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program brings accomplished mid‑level professionals to the United States for a year of combined academic (NON-DEGREE) and professional work. Fellows are selected based on potential for leadership and commitment to public service.

RECRUITMENT:  Appropriate candidates are mid‑career professionals in leadership positions who have the required experience/skills, commitment to public service and potential for advancement in their professions. Prospective fellows should have a minimum of five years professional experience and should be policy rather than research or technically oriented (the exception is drug abuse).

NOT ELIGIBLE: Recent graduates, university teachers with no management responsibilities (except in the fields of drug abuse prevention, and TOEFL), and individuals with recent U.S. or third country experience (more than 6 months within the last 5 years), individuals with dual U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residence status, individuals who have attended a graduate school in the U.S. for one academic year or more during the seven years prior to August 2007.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Croatian citizenship, permanent employment in Croatia, 5 years of professional experience, university degree, English proficiency, age limit: 50.

 

 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

1.       How strict are the deadlines? Deadlines are firm.

2.       May I apply for more than one opening? Yes, if you fulfill all requirements.

3.       If  I was not successful in previous competitions, can I apply again?  Yes.

4.       What are the selection criteria?  The following factors are considered: professional qualifications, project proposal (quality, feasibility), how the acquired knowledge will be used upon return, English language competence, need for the project to be undertaken in the United States, personal qualifications, quality of references.  Preference will be given to candidates with little or no previous experience in the United States.

5.       What are the basic grant benefits?  Round trip air fare, monthly stipend, book allowance, and settling in allowance. 

6.       Can family members accompany?  Yes. You will be financially responsible for them.

7.       Can I choose university affiliation in the United States? No. Fellows will be placed hy an American administering agency. 

8.       Should I personally deliver my application? No. Applications should be mailed by registered mail to one of the above addresses.

9.       Should I mail references together with the application package? No. Referees should mail or fax references directly to one of the above addresses.
