PRESS RELEASE

Report Detailing Free Speech Developments in Iraq in 2006 - 2007

ARTICLE 19 has produced a report outlining some of the progress made, and some areas of continuing serious concern, for the protection of free speech in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.

The report looks at the impact of the new Constitution and the current status of the legal framework, recent developments in the regulation of broadcast media, as well as examining the nature of the threats and violence against the media. The report combines ARTICLE 19’s expertise on the right to freedom of expression with independent research and monitoring to provide a unique resource on the recent experience of the media and the protection of free expression more broadly.

This report has been produced as part of a wide programme of activities in the ARTICLE 19 / UNDP project for supporting the development of an independent, pluralistic and diverse media in Iraq. It is available on the ARTICLE 19 website in both English and Arabic.
