The Peace Institute (Institute for Contemporary Social and Political Studies), Ljubljana, Slovenia, is announcing The Peace Institute Fellowship Program 2002 Application deadline: 23 April 2002 The purpose of the program is to encourage strategic research of current social and political topics in Slovenia, neighboring regions and the European Union, thus contributing to the development of critical and alternative approaches in the process of the transformation of society and social policies. The program is largely aimed at young researchers involved in postgraduate study or post-doctoral programs; it is not intended to fund any level of university study. Applications are invited for the following fields and topics: I. SLOVENIA AND THE EUROPEAN UNION 1. The future of Europe. European Union citizenship. 2. European Union minimum standards policy and its practical implications. 3. The regionalisation of Slovenia during and after accession to the European Union. 4. The presence of Europe in the educational programs in Slovenia. 5. European Union legislation regarding the protection of “marginalised groups", including practical examples. 6. Migration policy of Slovenia and the European Union - comparison of legislation, strategic documents and recommendations (with focus on integration policy). 7. Cultural policies of Slovenia and the European Union – comparison of legislation, strategic documents and recommendations. Language policies of the European Union and Slovenia. II. CIVIL SOCIETY AND HUMAN RIGHTS 8. Existing educational programs on human rights in Slovenia and comparison with international experiences. 9. Slovenia’s policy on the fight against poverty and social exclusion. 10. Legal standards and existing policies (governmental and non-governmental) in the area of combating intolerance on national, European and international levels. 11. Discrimination in application procedures for Slovene citizenship. 12. Models of participation of non-governmental organizations in systemic and strategic decision-making. Comparison of practices in Slovenia and abroad. III. MEDIA 13. Media Policy of the European Union and its significance for the candidate countries (with emphasis on Slovenia). 14. Future of public broadcasting services in Europe (comparison of Slovenia and two other countries). 15. Self-regulation models in journalism and media industry in Europe (comparison of Slovenia and two other countries). 16. Access to public information and denial of the access to secret information – legislation, practice and control (comparison of Slovenia and two other countries). 17. Position, state of development and role of minority media in Europe (comparison of Slovenia and two other countries). Eligibility Applicants must have at least an university degree in social sciences, research experience and must have published in the fields listed above. Applications are encouraged from registered masters or doctoral students, or those who have completed this level of study. With regard to topics listed under points 1, 2, 5, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 applications from South East Europe, EU candidate countries and the European Union member states, in addition to those from Slovenia, are welcome. Knowledge of the languages necessary for the implementation of the project is expected. Applicants must submit: 1. Fully completed application form; 2. Research outline with a description of aims, methods and anticipated results (up to 5500 characters); 3. Curriculum Vitae (up to 3600 characters); 4. Bibliography. The Peace Institute may request additional information. Commitments of the Fellow 1. Detailed conceptualization and preparation of the research. Implementation of the research plan, which will be realized under supervision of the Peace Institute; 2. Submission of an interim and final report according to the guidelines of the Peace Institute. The expected final results of the fellowship program are research reports, containing empirical and analytical data on the researched topic, suitable for publishing. Commitments of the Peace Institute The Peace Institute will, in addition to the fellowship, provide the fellow with logistical assistance and mentor support, and assist foreign students in finding sources and contacts during their study visits. Stipend The highest total amount for an individual stipend, including material and, when applicable, travelling expenses, is 5000 US dollars. The stipend will be paid in two instalments – the first instalment upon signing the contract and the second instalment after the final report has been positively graded and approved by the Peace Institute. The duration of the program is six months, from 1 June 2002 to 1 December 2002. Application deadline: 23 April 2002 Short-listed applicants will be notified by 15 May 2002.
