IFJ podržava štrajk novinara ai tehnièara BBC-ja

23.05.2005.

Thousands of BBC staff have voted for strike action in opposition to the Corporation's plans to axe jobs and cut budgets. In this ballot, 83.9% of NUJ members voted to strike. Members of the other two unions, BECTU and Amicus, also voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

The strike dates have been fixed to 23 May (24 hours) and 31 May/1 June (48 hours). Strikes will run midnight to midnight.

What can YOU do?

Journalists –in the UK and across the world- can support the action by refusing to co-operate with BBC requests for comments, stories, interviews, to appear as guests, provide pictures etc. during those periods.

This strike is not only an industrial action in reaction to nearly 4000 job cuts. BBC staff are of course angry at plans to axe 19% of staff but they are also fighting for the future of the BBC. It is inevitable that if 80% of the staff are required to carry out 100% of the work with lower and lower budgets that quality will suffer. Corners will have to be cut and BBC news, comedy, drama, children’s and other programming will be devalued.

The BBC is planning changes to meet the challenges of a digital TV age. Journalists are not opposed to change but they are opposed to cuts which decimate programmes and lead to lower value for licence fee payers.
The situation at the BBC is part of a bigger threat to public service broadcasting all over Europe.

Fight for the BBC. Support the strike!

Thank you in advance for your support for our fight to save the BBC and public service broadcasting.
