IFJ poziva na solidarnost zbog rastuæeg vala nasilja prema novinarima

 The InternationalFederation of Journalists today called on the urgent need for action by theSomali authorities to provide greater protection for journalists following thetragic killing of a young Somali reporter.

On 5 June,unidentified gunmen opened fire onHornAfrikradio journalists DuniyaMuhiyadin Nur and Anab Mohamed Yare as they were traveling in a sedan on a roadconnectingMogadishucity to Afgoye district oflower Shabelle region, 30 kilometres outside ofMogadishu. Female reporter, Duniya Muhiyadinwas immediately admitted to Madiina hospital, but died shortly afterwards due tosevere injuries sustained from her bullet wounds. Her colleague, Anab MohamedYare survived without serious injury.

“This barbarickilling highlights the security crisis for journalists working inSomalia,” saidAidan White, IFJ General Secretary”. “It is time forsolidarity – both from within the country and from the internationalcommunity”.

The two journalistswere on their way to report on increased barricades of independent militias onthe highway betweenMogadishuand Afgoye. Due to the increase ofthese militia roadblocks, the drivers and bus conductors created their ownroadblock in a mark of protest and solidarity. They were ordering the peopledriving on that road to return, but when the sedan of the journalists turnedaround to avoid the roadblock of angry drivers and bus conductors, a number ofunidentified gunmen opened fire on their car.

Duniya Muhiyadin, 26,was a junior reporter ofHorn Afrik Radioand a presenter of a programcalled “Mogadishuand Today” broadcast onCapitalVoice Radio, an FM station owned by HornAfrik Media Corporation. She was awell-loved figure in the community and used to report societal events in thecity and carry out interviews with political figures.

According to the IFJaffiliate inSomalia, theSomali Journalists Network (SOJON), the security of journalists inMogadishuhas deterioratedconsiderably since the formation of the Transitional Federal Institutions inAugust last year.

“The security ofjournalists is crucial at the moment, and we will do every thing we can toimprove the safety conditions for journalists in cooperation with the localmedia industry,” said Omar Faruk Osman, SOJON Secretary General.

Both the IFJ andSOJON extend their deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of DuniyaMuhiyadin Nur.

The IFJ is calling for a thorough investigationinto both the incident surrounding the killing of Muhiyadin and the attackagainst another veteran journalist Abdalla Nuradin Ahmed also working forHornAfrikwho remains hospitalised after he was shot and wounded twoweeks ago inMogadishu.
