(ANEM/IFEX) - The following is an ANEM statement:
UNRESTRAINED REPORTING IN PUBLIC INTEREST
BELGRADE, November 24, 2006 - The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) is concerned over the attack of the Justice Minister Zoran Stojkovic on the Association's member station, Radio Boom 93 from Pozarevac.
Speaking to Radio Television Serbia (RTS), Justice Minister Stojkovic accused Radio Boom 93 of intentional distribution of misleading information about the situation in Serbian penitentiaries with the intention of provoking the revolt of inmates.
ANEM notes that the serious, arbitrary and quite sweeping accusation of the Justice Minister aimed at the reporting of Radio Boom 93 is an obvious example of unacceptable and unlawful pressuring of a broadcaster and limiting of freedom of public information.
ANEM recalls that Radio Boom 93 had been banned several times during the 1990s, due to the station's refusal to make its independent editorial policy and loyalty to professional standards and journalism codes conform to the interests of politicians and political parties. ANEM thus gives full support to Radio Boom 93 in its efforts to defend its editorial independence and professionalism one more time.
To accuse media, reporting on social developments, of misleading news is an utterly unacceptable model of behavior. ANEM thus urges all appropriate authorities to abstain from such allegations, and rather to allow media to acquire information on the situation in Serbian penitentiaries and all relevant information in the public interest.
