Call for strike on 18 June 2008-

Against the attacks on French public broadcasting !

 

In France, president Sarkozy announced the suppression of advertising revenues for public broadcasting but he also refused to increase the licence fee and he is unable to provide any serious information about alternative sources of revenues. At the same time, the government plans a second advertising break during the programme on commercial televisions and a relaxation of the anti-concentration rules.

This means less money for public broadcasting and more revenues for private broadcasters. This financial turmoil will have consequences on quality and working conditions.

A special Committee will send its report to President Sarkozy on 25 June and a strike will take place on 18June.

In view of these dramatic threats, unions are on strike to defend:

• adequate funding of public broadcasting;
• labour rights and collective agreements;
• job security for journalists and media workers of French public broadcasting.

 

A demonstration will take place on 18 June at 2pm at Place de la Bastille in Paris and staff of public broadcasting will be on strike.
